How to Balance Chemical Equations for WAEC & JAMB – Full Explanation
Balancing chemical equations doesn't have to be confusing. Learn the step-by-step method to balance any equation easily for WAEC and JAMB.

Balancing a chemical equation simply means making sure the number of atoms for each element is exactly the same on both the reactant side and the product side.
What Is Equation Balancing?
In chemistry, the Law of Conservation of Mass states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. Because of this, everything you start with in a chemical reaction (the reactants) must equal everything you end up with (the products).
How WAEC and JAMB Test This
In WAEC theory, you will be asked to complete and balance equations for 2-3 marks. In JAMB CBT, they will give you an unbalanced equation with letters (like x, y, z) and ask you to find the correct numbers that balance it.
Worked Example: The SmartestNG Method
Let’s balance the reaction between Hydrogen and Oxygen to form Water. Unbalanced: H₂ + O₂ → H₂O Step 1: Count the atoms on both sides.
- Reactants (Left): 2 Hydrogen, 2 Oxygen
- Products (Right): 2 Hydrogen, 1 Oxygen (Oxygen is unbalanced). Step 2: Add coefficients (big numbers in front) to balance. To get 2 Oxygens on the right, place a "2" in front of H₂O: H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O Step 3: Re-count and fix. Now we have 4 Hydrogens on the right (2 × 2), but only 2 on the left. Put a "2" in front of the H₂ on the left: 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O (Balanced: 4 Hydrogens and 2 Oxygens on both sides!)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Never change the small numbers (subscripts): You cannot change H₂O to H₂O₂ to balance oxygen. H₂O₂ is hydrogen peroxide, a completely different chemical! Only add big numbers (coefficients) to the front.
- Forgetting to multiply: If you put a 2 in front of H₂O, remember it multiplies both the H and the O.
Quick Q&A
Q: Can I use fractions to balance equations? A: Yes, fractions are allowed in advanced chemistry, but for JAMB and WAEC, always multiply the whole equation to remove the fraction so you have whole numbers. Q: What is the fastest way to balance equations in JAMB? A: Always leave single elements (like O₂ or H₂) for the very last step. Balance the complex molecules first.
